In today’s society the matter of Freedom of Speech is being questioned. The use of â€Å"Hate Speech† is being used to identify words and actions that often target ethnic and racial groups, those with gender related differences, and the beliefs of others in general. Is it acceptable to express ones ideas and actions if it brings about distention among a nation? Should it be acceptable to destroy symbolic icons on which American history was founded? Is it permissible to single out individuals with harmful actions or words because their beliefs don’t line up with our own? The action and words being used have reached concerning proportions as insults, threats, and disrespectable events are being targeted toward these specific groups. Is it acceptable to express ones ideas and actions if it brings about dissension among a nation? 90 In examining the principal behind freedom of speech one can find many positive reasons to embrace the First Amendment. A prime example is; having the privilege of living in a democratic country where one can freely express their ideas and opinions without fear of persecution. Imagine living in a country, such as North Korea, where one has absolutely no individual rights to speak or express their thoughts. On the negative side, if a privilege such as this is abused by derogatory remarks such as hate speech breeds, it affects not only an individual or specific group but the moral of a democratic country. When this happens action must be taken to preserve the hard ear ned title of freedom. The values and morals of a nation can easily become tainted and its reputation damaged if bigotry, defamation and seeds of dissension are sown and allowed to flourish.
